9 Ways God Speak to His People in Bible

Have you ever heard someone’s testimony of how God has spoken to them in a clear way in a particular situation? You may always find a few in every small group or church, who always have accounts of God’s clear voice. Have you ever wondered how could God speak to everyone but you? Does God really speak? Or is it a mere emotion or feeling? Does He really communicate in a clear (sometimes audible) voice? The answer is of course “Yes!!”. He does. So, what are the ways in which He speaks? Let us look at what the Bible says about the ways in which God speaks to His people.

  1. Through the Word of God(2 Tim 3:16, Psalm 119:11, 105):This is the most clear and effective way of God’s communication with His people. If you want to know how things work perfectly, you need to read the manual. The Bible is God’s manual for His people. But as in case with other manuals, we often ignore the Bible. How often do we try everything else, but His word?
  2. Through the inner still, small voice of Holy Spirit (Acts 11:12, Acts 13:2, Acts 16:6-7, 1 Kings 19:12, Isaiah 30:19-21)
  3. Through the advice and counsel of the men and women of God (Prov 12:15)
  4. Through the Audible Voice of God (Acts 9:4-5)
  5. Through Dreams(Matthew 1:20-21) – There are many instances in the Bible, where God clearly communicates through dreams.
  6. Through Visions (Acts 10:9-18)
  7. Through Angels (Luke 1: 26-38)  (Check out Angels and Demons: Bible Study)
  8. Through circumstances: However there is a danger of opening doors to Satan by letting mere circumstances dictate our lives. . So be wise and discerning with regards to your circumstances and expect God to speak to you through them.
  9. By Inner Conviction and Peace: It is similar to the inner still, small voice of Holy Spirit.  God can give you deep conviction and inner peace about something. (Discover God’s Will – Practical Preparation)

We have all experienced some of these ways of God’s communications at different times. There is one question though.

Is there a danger here? Can we misinterpret our voice or desire as God’s voice? After all, sometimes we hear what we like to hear! I believe that it is important to examine it through multiple sources.

It is like three flag poles. When all three poles align in one direction, you can be sure of god’s will and direction for the particular situation. These three poles can be

  1. Word of God
  2. Inner Conviction
  3. Circumstances

I hope and pray that ‘God will speak to you’ through this bible study notes!!

    Hi ,

Nice Study. Very concise and accurate. Just want more clarification on the 2nd pole mentioned in your study. How do you define inner peace? Many times it is difficult to use Pole No 2 to find the God’s will. Probably Pole No 1 is the best and let us try to face the Pole No 3 in accordance with the Pole No 1.

  2. Bible SEO says

The Inner peace can be more clearly understood with inner conviction. I believe that God in someways, do give some conviction or “so called peace” for certain direction or decision. Important thing is to check with the first sign that is the ‘word of god’. People often make a mistake by interpreting their own desire, as a sign from God!

I agree with you that Pole no. 1 which is ‘The word of God’ is the best measure of knowing God’s will for one’s life decision.

What a wonderful site you have and great topics. I would like to make a comment about “How God Speaks To Us” I agree with everything you said, after all it is scriptural and cannot be disgreed with. I would like to add something to your statement or one of your bloggers statments, which is “The Word of God is the best way God speaks to us”. Again, I agree with the statement. However, the problem is most people do not discern the Word by the Spirit of God. The reason is many do not study the Word, but simple read the Bible. Many do not sit under anointed teachers set in the Body of Christ, for the purpose of teaching them to rightly divide the Word. When a Christian only hears the message of salvation taught year after year, it is impossible for them to grow to a place where they become skilled in their use of the Word of righteousness.

Heb.5:13 “For everyone who lives only on the milk of God’s Word is unskilled in his use of the Word of rightousness”.

Heb. 6:12 “So you do not become sluggish {disinterested} follow after those and become imitators of those through faith {acting on Word} and patience inherit the promises.”

So, sitting under anointed teachers is extremely important and necessary in order to truly interupt the scriptures on a personal level. Other wise we could be like the man who said “Lord, you say in the Bible to stand on your word, well here I am, standing on your word”. The problem was, he had placed the Bible under his feet and was standing on top of it. Gives a great image of misunderstanding the scriptures.

Also, knowing how to discern what is written for the Church age, dispensation of Grace, and what was not keeps us from becoming confused and attempting to apply OT laws, to NT grace and faith.

Enough said. My encouragment….find a church that not only preaches but teaches you how to walk in the Word of God. Ephs. 4: tells us God set different anointings in the Body of Christ for the purpose of bringing Christians to spiritual maturity.

Blessings, increased understanding and wisdom be yours.

This is just my take on how to tell if a message is from God or just your inner thoughts. When I pray about something I ask God to give me conformation ,it usually is a spacific prayer like (Lord, I know my manager Doug at work is in anguish and needs help,I don’t know where he stands on religon or his faith,If it is your will Lord for me to help him,and guide him to your word and truth in his time of need please let my manager start by comming to me next week asking simple questions. He knows where I stand in faith because of my boldness in symbols of faith that I wear and carry everyday at work, then I will know it is your will and not just my thoughts.I ask this through your son Christ Jesus, all Glory and praise is Father ,Amen). but can be as general as (Lord, please send someone to share their testomony so that I may be edified and feel lifted,Amen).
The thing is not to get discouraged if it doesn’t happen next week because God always has perfect timing.
Sorry, if I got a little off topic there but ,I felt compelled to and my personal prayer for my co-worker.I guess it still gets my point across if you ask God for the spacific signs you are less likly to interpret them wrongly. This has helped me in my walk of faith and the Lord has not steered me astray.

This is very helpful as I have been looking for an elaborated version on the ways which GOD speaks to HIS children. The most valuable in my opinion is the bible as it remains constant in good or bad times. Sometimes our inner voice/desires may mislead us and even circumstances can fool us.
I have been praying for something and have consulted the bible and Godly men and my inner peace is in agreement with the two above mentioned.
I have a problem and your Godly advice would be a blessing indeed. I have been asking GOD to further reveal HIS will in the physical world through circumstances and I find that everything else is in agreement except what is happening in the physical. I am aware that reality/physical world doesn’t always paint the picture of what is to happen but I wonder if the fact that my circumstance/physical world contradicts the bible, Godly counsel and inner peace is a test of my faith and perhaps the work of satan?
Replies in light of this are welcome.
Many blessings and may GOD continue to reign even through the internet.

  7. LeeAnn says

This may be very sidetracking to an extent but fits in with the ways in which God speaks to his people. I also apologize because I know this will be long but it is the only way in which I know how to find guidance until I find a church. In order to ask for any advice that can be provided, I am compelled to fully explain.

I have been troubled lately. I admit I fell, lost my faith, and for years I have walked away from God. Before I walked away and lost my faith I noticed that I was able to see some things others did not and have dreams that sometimes came true or dreams that showed me direction in life. The past few years while I have not had many visions during sleep my intuition has grown stronger and I have been seeing things while awake. I researched Wiccan looking for answers and ways to make the bad things I see go away. While some ghost are harmless and at the most some occasionally move something to another place or change the volume on the scanner or television. However, there have been some that have passed through and terrify me. While I have not been physically harmed it has caused much emotional turmoil. My beautiful wonderful 8 year old daughter has been asking me about God for the past few months and I thank her for directing me back to my faith. While it was God working through her to bring me back I still feel I owe my daughter a lot. I have struggle with my faith though. I feel as though I may lose it again. So while writing in my diary I went from writing about my day and how I feel and started writing to God. The following is parts of what I wrote:
“I am guilty for things I have done. I am sorry for turning my back. I am asking forgiveness for the things I have done. I am afraid that my daughter may cross the line and go down the wrong path someday. I ask of you to protect her and show me how to keep her on the right path. Show me how to protect her from making the mistakes I have. While I fear for me, I will sacrifice myself to protect her. There is no cost too high and none I would refuse if it offers and ensures her safety. She is too young to see the things I see or know the things I know. I beg of you not to let her see or hear another thing. I ask and beg this of you. If it is your will for her to see visions and have the abilities that I have I beg of you to wait until she is older. Please let her have the childhood that I never felt. I give myself to you and welcome you back into my life. Guide me and send me in the direction that I need to go. Help me to do the things that need to be done and show me what your will is. All I ask is that you protect those I love and because of my mistake in life that they do not suffer my penitence. Show me the way to bring I am ready to receive your word and let your will be done.”

What originally brought me to this site was searching for a list of angels both good and bad that is mentioned within the bible. I was compelled to search online especially because I do not yet own a bible. The other compulsion was to research invoking and I still do not understand that. While I was searching angels and demons I came across an occult book that was written originally in 1801. This occurred because I wanted to check sources from what appears to be a good collection of different angels and demons from various religions and beliefs. The website being http://www.palmyria.co.uk/superstition/angelsdemons.htm I am a psychology major with a Bachelor of Arts. Although I have decided to walk away from Wicca because it is against God and many things within it are against his will according to what I remember from church years ago. Although, I still do not know that much of the Wiccan religion and have attempted to learn for years I would have previously been called a beginner. Only knowing some of the herbs, candle colors, and mostly studied protection and cleansing the house of evil and evil spirits over the past year. Curious for research I decided to skim the table of contents.

Well back to my point… Finding interesting first Chap. VI.. I did read the whole chapter, but here is an excerpt from it: “Now the First Cause (which is God), although he doth, by intelligences and the heavens, work upon these inferior things, does sometimes (these mediums being laid aside, or their officiating being suspended) work those things immediately by himself–which works are then called miracles. But whereas secondary causes do, by the command and appointment of the First Cause, necessarily act, and are necessitated to produce their effects; if God shall, notwithstanding, according to his pleasure, so discharge and suspend them that they shall wholly desist from the necessity of that command, then they are called the greatest miracles of God. For instance: the fire of the Chaldean furnace did not burn the children; the sun stood still at the command of Joshua, and became retrograde one whole day; also, at the prayer of Hezekiah, it went back ten degrees; and when our Savior Christ was crucified, it became darkened, though at full moon.” Chap. XIII. “THE passions of the mind are much helped, and are helpful, and become most powerful, by virtue of the heaven, as they agree with the heaven–either by any natural agreement, or voluntary election; for, as Ptolemy says, he who chuseth that which is the better, seems to differ nothing from him who hath this of Nature. It conduceth, therefore, very much for the receiving the benefit of the heavens, in any work, if we shall, by the heaven, make ourselves suitable to it in our thoughts, affections, imaginations, elections, deliberations, contemplations, and the like”. There are some chapters on spirits, angels both good and bad, and prophetical dreams. There appears to be a lot of information with a great influence being that of God when I skimmed through different chapters at random.

My problem is I am unsure if I am being misled by an evil spirit or if it is God’s will for the read the whole book. It is as though I am to search for symbols, but that I am to first read and gain knowledge. Like this is the path that will provide protection from the evil spirits that haunt me and torture my mind thus allowing me to fulfill God’s will without question and doubt. I am compelled to go further and follow this path as though it will strengthen my faith. Yet, despite the compelling feeling that it is good, I am afraid. I fear being tricked and pushed away from God again. I have prayed for protection asking God to banish the evil ones from my home and mind for a while now. I have asked him into my home, my life, and have given myself unto him and that is where I was taken. Any advice that can be given would be greatly appreciated.

The word of God never fails, and keep in mind. Jesus told us as to those before, that the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, will reveal all truth. The word is the stencil over all lifes questions. Place it over it and it will align with His word or not, and the Holy Spirit will reveal/ bring to your rememberance, as you must study His word . Thanks for all of your most helpful and encouraging lessons.

JESUS HEALING THE LEPER; What has stuck me very powerfully is the fact that even before saying ” I am willing, be cleansed” Jesus touched the rotting body of the Leper. Think of that and let us do the same. Touch the untouchable. Let our words follow our actions. Praise the Lord, the Healer.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God….(NKJV)

There are many who view water baptism as non-essential in becoming saved from the penalty of sin.

Is water baptism essential for salvation or did God misspeak?

Colossians 2:11-13 …by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, (NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said you were dead in your trespasses before you were buried in baptism?

Did God misspeak when He said through faith and baptism our trespasses were forgiven?

Ephesians 5:25-27 …just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. (NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said Jesus sanctified, cleansed, and made the church holy and without blemish with the washing of water by the word?

Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.(NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said we should walk in newness of life after being buried in baptism? If baptism is not essential then why not walk in a new life before being baptized in water?

Romans 6:6 know this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. (NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said our old sinful nature was done away with when we were buried with Christ in baptism?

Was our sinful natured destroyed before baptism? No, it was not.

Before water baptism we were slaves to sin.

Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved..(NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said believe and be baptized in order to be saved?

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…..(NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said repent and be immersed in water in order to have your sins forgiven?

Acts 22:16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ (NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He told Saul to be baptized in water to wash away his sins?

1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us, namely baptism (not the removal of filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said baptism now saves us?

Galatians 3:26-27……27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (NKJV)

Did God misspeak when He said believers in Christ are baptized into Christ?

Every word Of Scripture come from God the Father.

Has God misspoken concerning water baptism and salvation or has man misunderstood, rejected, or ignored God’s teaching.

Is it possible that men reject God’s teaching about water baptism due to their own pride? No one likes admitting they are wrong.

Satan was expelled from heaven because of his pride.
