9 Ways God Speak to His People in Bible
Email This Bible Study
Have you ever heard someone’s testimony of how God has spoken in clear way in particular situation? You may always find few in every small group or church, who always have accounts of God’s clear voice. Have you ever wonder how can God speak to everyone but you? Does God really speak? or is it mere emotion or feeling? Does he really communicate in clear (sometimes audible) voice? The answer is of course “Yes”. He does. So, what are the ways in which he speaks? Let us look at what bible says about the ways in which God speaks to his people.
- Through the Word of God (2 Tim 3:16, Psalm 119:11, 105): This is the most clear and effective way of God’s communication with his people. If you want to know how things works perfectly, you need to read the manual. Bible is God’s manual for his people. But as in case with other manuals, we often ignore Bible. How often do we try everything else, but his words?
- Through the inner still, small voice of Holy Spirit (Acts 11:12, Acts 13:2, Acts 16:6-7, 1 Kings 19:12, Isaiah 30:19-21)
- Through the advice and counsel of men and women of God (Prov 12:15)
- Through the Audible Voice of God (Acts 9:4-5)
- Through Dreams (Matthew 1:20-21) – There are many instances in the bible, when God clearly communicates through dreams.
- Through Visions (Acts 10:9-18)
- Through Angels (Luke 1: 26-38) (Check out Angels and Demons: Bible Study)
- By circumstances: There is a danger though, letting mere circumstances run our lives, can be opening doors to Satan. So be wise with regards to your circumstances and expect God to speak to you through them.
- By Inner Conviction and Peace: It is similar to the inner still, small voice of holy spirit. God can give you deep conviction and inner peace about something. (Discover God’s Will – Practical Preparation)
We have all experienced some of these ways of God’s communications at different times. There is one question though.
Is there a danger here? Can we misinterpret our voice or desire as God’s voice? After all, sometimes we hear what we like to hear! I believe that it is important to examine it through multiple sources.
It is like three flag poles. When all three poles align in one direction, you can be sure of god’s will and direction for the particular situation. These three poles can be
- Word of God
- Inner Conviction
- Circumstances
I hope and pray that ‘God will speak to you’ through this bible study notes!!

Hi ,
Nice Study. Very concise and accurate. Just want more clarification on the 2nd pole mentioned in your study. How do you define inner peace? Many times it is difficult to use Pole No 2 to find the God’s will. Probably Pole No 1 is the best and let us try to face the Pole No 3 in accordance with the Pole No 1.
Regards
Sudhir
The Inner peace can be more clearly understood with inner conviction. I believe that God in someways, do give some conviction or “so called peace” for certain direction or decision. Important thing is to check with the first sign that is the ‘word of god’. People often make a mistake by interpreting their own desire, as a sign from God!
I agree with you that Pole no. 1 which is ‘The word of God’ is the best measure of knowing God’s will for one’s life decision.
Greetings.
What a wonderful site you have and great topics. I would like to make a comment about “How God Speaks To Us” I agree with everything you said, after all it is scriptural and cannot be disgreed with. I would like to add something to your statement or one of your bloggers statments, which is “The Word of God is the best way God speaks to us”. Again, I agree with the statement. However, the problem is most people do not discern the Word by the Spirit of God. The reason is many do not study the Word, but simple read the Bible. Many do not sit under anointed teachers set in the Body of Christ, for the purpose of teaching them to rightly divide the Word. When a Christian only hears the message of salvation taught year after year, it is impossible for them to grow to a place where they become skilled in their use of the Word of righteousness.
Heb.5:13 “For everyone who lives only on the milk of God’s Word is unskilled in his use of the Word of rightousness”.
Heb. 6:12 “So you do not become sluggish {disinterested} follow after those and become imitators of those through faith {acting on Word} and patience inherit the promises.”
So, sitting under anointed teachers is extremely important and necessary in order to truly interupt the scriptures on a personal level. Other wise we could be like the man who said “Lord, you say in the Bible to stand on your word, well here I am, standing on your word”. The problem was, he had placed the Bible under his feet and was standing on top of it. Gives a great image of misunderstanding the scriptures.
Also, knowing how to discern what is written for the Church age, dispensation of Grace, and what was not keeps us from becoming confused and attempting to apply OT laws, to NT grace and faith.
Enough said. My encouragment….find a church that not only preaches but teaches you how to walk in the Word of God. Ephs. 4: tells us God set different anointings in the Body of Christ for the purpose of bringing Christians to spiritual maturity.
Blessings, increased understanding and wisdom be yours.
